Kraftwerk Augst/Wyhlen, Hydroelectric power station in Augst, Switzerland.
Kraftwerk Augst/Wyhlen is a hydroelectric station spanning 212 meters (696 feet) across the Rhine River and generating electricity through turbines and water management systems. The facility operates modern Straflo turbine groups installed in the 1990s, producing approximately 73 megawatts of power.
The station was constructed between 1908 and 1912 by engineers P. Miescher, G. Hunziker, O. Boßhard, and E. Oppikofer along the Rhine River. Renovation work in the 1990s replaced most original Francis turbines with Straflo turbines to improve the facility's efficiency.
The station is recognized as a regional cultural property and represents the industrial development of the Basel-Landschaft area. It stands as an example of early 20th-century engineering and technical innovation in Switzerland.
The station raises the water level of the Rhine significantly at this location, which can affect accessibility for visits. The surrounding area offers walking and viewing opportunities, especially near the nature reserve on the Wyhlen side.
The creation of the reservoir raised the Rhine by approximately 8 meters (26 feet) at this location. This transformation led to the formation of a nature reserve above the pressure zone on the Wyhlen side, which now provides habitat for various species.
