Roman museum

The Roman Museum in Augst holds objects from an ancient city that once stood here during Roman times. The rooms contain pottery, coins, jewelry, weapons, and everyday items that archaeologists have excavated from the ground.

The settlement was founded about 2000 years ago and served as an important trading point in Roman Switzerland. After Roman times ended, the site lay forgotten until archaeologists in the 1800s began uncovering the ruins.

The place shows how people lived here nearly 2000 years ago with tools, clothing, and beliefs that were completely different from today. You can see which trades mattered and how families organized their daily routines.

The entrance leads you through several exhibition rooms arranged in a logical way that is easy to follow. The building is wheelchair accessible, and on nice days a walk over the archaeological outdoor site is worthwhile.

The museum sits directly above the remains of the old city, so when you visit you literally stand in archaeological layers. The outdoor site shows visible foundations of houses and temples that you can explore yourself.
