Hülftenschanz, Military defensive fortification in Pratteln, Switzerland
Hülftenschanz is a network of military fortifications stretching across multiple municipalities from Pratteln through to Liestal, comprising around 107 separate defensive structures and bunkers. These installations consist of concrete buildings, observation posts, and gun emplacements positioned at intervals across the landscape.
Planning for the cordon began in 1937 and construction started soon after, with the first bunkers completed by 1938 through private contractors. The project was Switzerland's response to growing tensions in Europe and the perceived need to protect its territory.
This cordon shows how Switzerland prepared to defend itself and reflects the country's approach to security during a tense period in European history. Walking through the remnants reveals how deeply military readiness shaped the region.
The site spreads across several kilometers and some sections are open to explore, though the terrain is uneven with concrete structures requiring careful navigation. Wear sturdy shoes and plan to visit when you have enough daylight to see the various installations.
Part of the installation was temporarily relocated in 2017 to accommodate the Eidgenössisches Schwingfest, Switzerland's largest traditional wrestling competition. This unusual decision demonstrates how military heritage can be adapted for major community gatherings.
