Alt-Regensberg Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Regensdorf, Switzerland.
Alt-Regensberg Castle is a ruined fortress sitting on a moraine hill in Regensdorf, in the canton of Zurich. What remains above ground includes a square tower with very thick stone walls and an entrance set high above the ground, which could only be reached by ladder.
The fortress was first built in the mid-11th century and went through several building phases over the following centuries. In 1458, a merchant named Rudolf Mötteli took ownership and made changes to the interior layout of the site.
The name reflects its location on a glacial ridge and its role as a fortified settlement in the medieval landscape. Visitors today can observe the remaining walls and understand how the site once functioned as both a residence and a defensive position.
The path up to the hill is steep, so good footwear with a firm grip is strongly recommended. The site has no fencing or railings, so visitors should watch their step on the old stonework.
As the structure fell into decay, its stones were reused for nearby building projects, including the church of Regensdorf and bridges in Adlikon. This kind of stone salvaging was common in medieval times and left a visible mark on the buildings of the surrounding area.
