Regensdorf, municipality in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland
Regensdorf is a municipality in the Dielsdorf district of the canton of Zurich, situated on gently rolling land northwest of the city of Zurich. It is made up of several smaller localities, including Adlikon and Watt, and its landscape shifts from old village cores and vineyards to newer residential neighborhoods.
Regensdorf was first recorded in the early Middle Ages as a farming settlement with fields and vineyards. The ruins of the Altburg point to an early fortification in the area, and the town grew into a residential community during the 20th century as Zurich expanded.
The name Regensdorf traces back to an early medieval settlement name referring to the followers of a man called Regin. The old village church still stands at the center and serves as a visible gathering point for the community.
Regensdorf is directly connected to Zurich by commuter rail, making it easy to reach without a car. The surrounding hills and fields have well-marked walking paths that are accessible on foot from the village center, with no special equipment needed.
Regensdorf is home to one of the few remaining active vineyards in the greater Zurich area, still producing wine today. These vines sit within sight of modern apartment blocks, showing how old land uses and new development exist side by side here.
