Post office of Lausanne, Historic postal building in Lausanne, Switzerland
The Hôtel des Postes de Lausanne is a historic postal building in Lausanne, Switzerland. It stands on Place Saint-François and has a symmetrical U-shaped plan with white stone facades, high roofs, and chimneys.
The current building was constructed between 1896 and 1900 by architect Eugène Jost, replacing earlier post offices on the square. It was part of a major redevelopment of Place Saint-François that included new tram lines and commercial buildings.
Locals often call it the "château postal" because of its castle-like look. The building still houses a post office, and people come here to send mail or use other postal services.
The building sits in the city center, easily reached by public transport, with bus and metro stops nearby. Visitors can walk around the exterior at any time, but the interior is not open for tours.
The building's stone facade was inspired by the châteaux of the Loire Valley in France. It was one of the first structures in Lausanne to use reinforced concrete in its framework.
