Devil's Bridge, Stone bridge in Schöllenen Gorge, Switzerland
The stone arch spans across the Reuss River, connecting steep rock faces in a narrow passage through the Swiss Alps at 1500 meters elevation.
The first wooden crossing appeared in 1200, followed by a stone structure in 1595, with the current bridge dating from 1956 after multiple reconstructions.
The bridge earned its name from a folk tale where Uri residents outsmarted the devil by sending a goat across instead of a human soul.
The bridge serves as a vital connection on the Gotthard route between northern and southern Switzerland, accommodating both vehicles and pedestrians year-round.
The original foundation stones from 1595 remain visible on the left river bank, while the massive devil's stone rests in the valley near Göschenen.
