Fort Bäzberg, Military fortress in Uri, Switzerland
Fort Bäzberg is a mountain fortress in Uri built directly into the rock at 1850 meters elevation. The installation has three gun turrets above ground and extensive underground chambers connected by corridors and lifts.
Construction began in 1892 as part of Switzerland's defense system following the opening of the Gotthard railway in 1882. The fortress was designed to protect this critical transport route and the nation's border.
The fortress was built directly into the mountainside, showing how Switzerland designed its defense around the natural landscape. Visitors walking through the tunnels and gun positions see how military needs shaped what was built here.
The fort is accessible by mountain road or military cable car, with guided tours available to explore the preserved structures. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for temperature differences between the underground and surface areas.
The installation originally held three 12-centimeter cannons in armored turrets, later replaced by fortress mine launchers in 1951. This upgrade shows how military technology and Swiss defense evolved over decades.
