Funiculaire Écluse – Plan, Funicular railway in Neuchâtel, Switzerland
The Funiculaire Écluse-Plan stretches 391 meters through three tunnels, connecting the lower station at Ecluse to the upper station at Plan.
Built in 1890 as a water counterbalance system with Riggenbach rack rails, the funicular underwent electrification in 1907 and automation in 1922.
The funicular represents a key element of Neuchâtel's public transport network, serving both local residents and visitors throughout the canton.
Operating every 10 minutes with two intermediate stops at Boine and Côte, passengers can press buttons to board or exit at their desired station.
The system climbs 111 meters in elevation with a maximum gradient of 38 percent, carrying up to 30 standing and 9 seated passengers per car.
