Funiculaire Écluse – Plan

The Funiculaire Écluse-Plan is a funicular railway in Neuchâtel that connects the lower city area with the upper neighborhood. The route winds through tunnels and stops at three stations to serve passengers traveling between different elevation levels.

The railway opened in 1890 as a water-powered system using rack rails for traction. Later upgrades brought electrical power and semi-automated operation to the line.

The funicular represents a key element of Neuchâtel's public transport network, serving both local residents and visitors throughout the canton.

The line runs regularly between its three stations and allows passengers to board or exit at different points. You can ride the full length or hop on at any intermediate stop depending on where you need to go.

The system climbs 111 meters in elevation with a maximum gradient of 38 percent, carrying up to 30 standing and 9 seated passengers per car.
