Collégiale de Neuchâtel, Gothic church in Neuchâtel, Switzerland

The Collégiale de Neuchâtel is a Gothic church with three Romanesque apses at its east end and a large stained glass rose window at the main entrance. The interior features a vaulted ceiling system with multiple decorative elements that create distinct spaces within the structure.

Construction started in 1185 and the church received consecration in 1276, establishing it as one of the oldest religious buildings in the region. The structure evolved over subsequent centuries as Gothic elements were gradually incorporated into the original Romanesque design.

The monuments to the Counts of Neuchâtel dominate the north side of the choir with painted figures sheltered beneath late medieval arches. This section shows how local nobility was honored within the church walls over the centuries.

The church is accessible on foot, and visitors can easily spot the main entrance with the large rose window as an orientation point. The interior layout is straightforward to navigate, though certain areas like the choir section may have limited access during services.

A lantern tower above the transept channels natural light directly into the interior, creating shifting light patterns that change with the time of day. This design choice produces a dynamic illumination that transforms the interior space continuously throughout the day.
