TBZ Turm, Wooden tower at Technische Berufsschule, Zürich, Switzerland
The TBZ Turm is a red wooden structure that rises from the roof of the Technische Berufsschule in Zürich, reaching approximately 13 meters high. It features an observation platform positioned around 10 meters up, offering views across the school and surrounding area.
The structure was created in the early 2000s through a collaboration between the school and German artist Daniel Roth, who drew ideas from a historic Soviet engineering design. The project was completed in 2005 and has since become a defining feature of the school campus.
The tower has become part of how students perceive their school, blending craft and design in a way that marks the campus visually. Its red wooden form stands out among typical school buildings and shapes how people experience the site.
Access to the structure is restricted and requires advance arrangement with the school, so it cannot be visited spontaneously. Visitors should contact the Technische Berufsschule directly to inquire about conditions for a visit.
The structure remained open to visitors for several years after completion but was later closed due to behavioral concerns from students that created safety issues. Today, visiting is possible only under special circumstances, making it a rarely visited spot on the campus.
