X-TRA, Modernist event venue in Zurich, Switzerland

X-TRA is an event venue in Zurich housed in a brick building from the 1930s with multiple spaces designed for different gathering sizes. The interior combines original architecture with modern equipment for concerts, exhibitions, and private functions.

The Limmathaus was built for the Volksgenossenschaft Zürich 5, founded on 26 April 1926, and inaugurated on 1 November 1931 after 16 months of construction, to plans by Karl Egender. It is a listed example of Neues Bauen, alongside the nearby Kunstgewerbeschule. A side wing links it to the Reformed Johanneskirche of 1898. Ownership passed to the Stiftung Limmathaus Zürich on 1 January 2013.

The building was conceived by the Volksgenossenschaft Zürich 5 as a place for the political and social life of the working class, and its statutes also provided for a restaurant, a post office and baths. Today the X-TRA Production AG is the main tenant, running the restaurant and using the halls as an event location. A post office still operates on site.

The venue sits in Zurich's industrial and cultural district and is well served by public transportation. Visitors should check ahead about scheduled events, as the program changes regularly.

The building opened on 1 November 1931 after 16 months of construction, financed by the Volksgenossenschaft Zürich 5, founded on 26 April 1926. It originally housed a bathhouse with tubs and showers, because many 1930s flats had no bathroom; the post office branch from that era still operates, while the baths have been replaced by private training rooms in the basement.
