Alte Kirche Wollishofen, Baroque church in District 2, Switzerland
The Alte Kirche Wollishofen is a baroque church with a rectangular hall plan, a polygonal choir section, and a prominent ridge turret rising from the peaked roof. The interior layout clearly separates the main worship space from the choir area through its architectural proportions.
The building was constructed in 1702 to serve growing needs of the farming village, replacing an earlier chapel that had existed on the site since 1281. The new construction reflected the village's development over four centuries.
The stained glass windows feature a complete series created by Max Hunziker from 1948 to 1958, filling the interior with colored light that tells religious stories. These works remain central to how visitors experience the space today.
You can enter through the southern hall entrance or the eastern side portal, with services held regularly during the week. Check ahead if you wish to visit the interior, as access times may be limited to scheduled service times.
Inside stands a walnut pulpit from 1702 featuring intricate inlay work and a biblical inscription from the Book of Galatians. This craftwork shows the careful attention paid to detail even in smaller furnishings of the period.
