Küblis Kraftwerkzentrale, Hydroelectric power station in Küblis, Switzerland.
Küblis Kraftwerkzentrale is a hydroelectric power station in the Grisons municipality of Küblis, built from 1919 to 1922. The facility has a cross-shaped floor plan made of tuff stone on a concrete base and draws water from several surrounding sources.
The facility was started in 1919 by Bündner Kraftwerke company and finished in 1922 to produce power for the Rhaetian Railway. Electricity first flowed into the rail lines in 1921, eventually supplying the railway and surrounding communities.
The name reflects the power of water that has been harnessed here for over a century. Visitors see a blend of industrial building and local architecture, showing how the region adopted modern energy production early on.
The grounds can be viewed from outside and clearly show the architectural features of this early hydroelectric facility. Visitors should note that this is an active industrial site and access to certain areas may be restricted.
The building was designed by architect Nicolaus Hartmann to blend local building traditions with industrial function, making it unusual for its time. This mix of tradition and industry was pioneering then and still shapes how the structure looks today.
