St. Maria Neudorf, Catholic church in eastern St. Gallen, Switzerland
St. Maria Neudorf is a Catholic church in St. Gallen featuring a symmetrical design with two round windows and a central dome with small openings. The structure combines Art Nouveau elements with modern religious architecture and is complemented by a parish center and house connected via covered galleries.
Swiss architect Adolf Gaudy designed and built the structure between 1914 and 1917, marking a shift toward modern religious architecture in the country. Completion fell during a transitional period when sacred spaces began integrating contemporary design principles.
The interior displays murals by Fritz Kunz and stained glass by Richard Nüscheler that reflect the craftsmanship of their time. These artworks shape the experience of visitors and create a distinct feeling when entering the space.
The building is linked to community spaces and a parish house, making it a hub for religious gatherings and community events. The covered connections allow easy movement between different areas regardless of weather conditions.
The organ installed in 1927 features 87 registers with about 4000 pipes, including a special distant work placed beneath the dome. This setup allows sound to project downward from above, creating an uncommon acoustic experience.
