Europuddle, Reflecting pool at Gustav-Gull-Platz, Switzerland
Europuddle is a shallow water installation with multiple jets that create ripples across its surface, designed to look like a giant puddle in the middle of the plaza. The water reaches only about 20 centimeters (8 inches) in depth and is framed by a white stone edge.
This water feature was built by Swiss Federal Railways in 2019 as part of the development of the Europaallee district in central Zurich. The project marked a significant transformation of a former railway area into a modern urban space.
This space brings people together to watch how buildings reflect in the still water and to experience a moment of calm in the city center. Residents often pause here to observe the changing reflections throughout the day.
You can walk through the water when it is dry, but the surface becomes slippery when wet. It is wise to wear appropriate footwear or go barefoot to avoid slipping.
Depending on its operating mode, the water creates different effects: sometimes it mirrors the surroundings like a calm lake, while other times fountains splash across it. These changing moods give the plaza different character throughout the day.
