Volkshaus, Music venue in Zürich, Switzerland
Volkshaus is a concert and events hall on Stauffacherstrasse in the Aussersihl district of Zurich, built in the Art Nouveau style. The building also houses a restaurant and a bar, both of which can be visited independently of any scheduled event.
The building opened in 1910 as a meeting and cultural space intended for the working population of Zurich. Over the following decades it gradually shifted from a politically charged gathering point to a general-purpose venue open to the whole city.
The name "Volkshaus" means "people's house" in German, reflecting the idea that the space should welcome everyone equally. Today the programming still spans many genres and styles, drawing people from different parts of the city.
The venue sits in Kreis 4, a lively district west of the city center, and is easy to reach by tram or bus. Visitors without concert tickets can still stop by the restaurant or bar on the ground floor.
The Volkshaus was among the first buildings in Zurich designed from the start as a multipurpose hall for the labor movement, which was unusual in Switzerland at the time. The Art Nouveau interior, with its curved lines and floral details, has been largely preserved to this day.
