Jingdezhen, Porcelain manufacturing center in Jiangxi, China

Jingdezhen is a city in northeastern Jiangxi province set among hills and rivers with significant kaolin deposits beneath the land. This raw material has been the foundation of pottery and porcelain production here for centuries.

The city was founded during the Han Dynasty under the name Xinping and renamed Jingdezhen in 1004. This change marked when it became China's main source of porcelain for imperial use.

Local artisans work in small workshops creating porcelain using techniques taught from one generation to the next. This craft tradition shapes daily life and appears in every piece that emerges from the kilns.

Visitors can reach the main sites like the Ceramic Museum, historic kilns, and pottery workshops using regular buses that serve different areas. It helps to explore the districts gradually since the ceramic attractions spread across the city.

Craftspeople here use specific clay extraction and firing methods that have changed little over more than 1,700 years. This deep knowledge about material preparation and temperature control makes the white porcelain produced here recognizable.
