Jiangxi, Province in southeastern China
Jiangxi is a province in southeastern China surrounded by mountains and crossed by the Gan River. Poyang Lake lies in the north and is the country's largest freshwater lake.
The area gained importance in the 8th century under the Tang dynasty when it became part of the Jiangnanxi Circuit and connected trade routes from the south to the imperial canal. Later, Jingdezhen developed into the center of porcelain production for the imperial court.
The city of Jingdezhen in the north has been producing porcelain for around 1,800 years and keeps alive the tradition that once made it the imperial workshop. Today, kilns and studios still show the craft steps that turn local kaolin into fine ceramics.
The climate is subtropical with average temperatures between 16 and 20 degrees Celsius (61 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit) year-round, with spring and autumn offering comfortable conditions. Mountain areas in the south and west can be cooler, while the lowlands in the center tend to be warmer.
The White Deer Grotto Academy near Mount Lu once served as a teaching place for the philosopher Zhu Xi and is still used for educational purposes today. The complex from the Song period is one of the oldest surviving academies in the country.
