Construction of this military headquarters began in 1969 during tensions with the Soviet Union, with the code name 131 derived from the January 31 project start date.
The complex represents China's Cold War defense strategy, featuring designated spaces for military commanders and an intended command center for nuclear conflict scenarios.
Visitors can explore sections of the tunnel system and view exhibits about military history, though some areas remain restricted to international tourists.
The facility includes an intended office for Mao Zedong and the grave of General Huang Yongsheng, who directed the construction project.
