Description
Underground Project 131 is a tunnel system carved into a mountain in Hubei province with different functional areas. The facility includes meeting rooms, offices, and communication centers built into the rock.
History
Construction began in 1969 during tense relations between China and the Soviet Union. The project received the code name 131, derived from the January 31 start date.
Culture
The complex shows how China organized its defense strategy during the Cold War and the role military leaders played in such projects. The spaces reflect the thinking of that era about how a nation prepared itself against potential conflicts.
