Dongpo Chibi

Dongpo Chibi is a historical site built on and around a large red cliff formation along the Yangtze River, with ancient structures dating back over 1700 years. The rock face rises steeply from the water's edge, and visitors can walk through buildings and pathways that have been preserved or restored across the centuries.

The site held military importance across several Chinese dynasties and later became closely linked with Song Dynasty poet Su Shi. His literary works transformed this location into a symbol of how nature and written expression were intertwined in classical Chinese culture.

The site preserves over a hundred stone inscriptions carved with poetry by Su Shi, showing how writers and scholars have long connected their work to this riverside location.

The site lies northwest of the old Huangzhou district and is accessible by various forms of transportation from the surrounding region. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes, as pathways climbing the cliff face can be steep and uneven in places.

The striking red color of the cliff comes from iron-rich rock formations and creates a visually distinctive landmark along the Yangtze River. This natural feature captured the imagination of many classical Chinese artists and writers over the centuries.
