Shijiazhuang, Capital city in Hebei Province, China
Shijiazhuang spreads across roughly 14,000 square kilometers (5,400 square miles) at the edge of the North China Plain, near the Taihang Mountains and south of the Hutuo River. The city combines flat plains with mountainous zones and sits on a junction of major transport routes.
The settlement grew from a small village to a major urban center after 1906 when the Beijing-Hankou railway construction made it a transport junction. It later became the capital of Hebei Province.
The Hebei Provincial Museum houses a large collection of bronze vessels, jade objects, and Buddhist sculptures from different Chinese dynasties. Visitors can see the material culture of the region shaped over many centuries.
The city runs an extensive public transport system with several metro lines that make it easier to navigate the different districts. Zhengding International Airport connects the city with many destinations across Asia.
The city has grown into a center of pharmaceutical manufacturing and hosts many medicine producers that supply their products throughout China and abroad. This specialization clearly shapes the local economy and cityscape.
