Zhangjiakou

Zhangjiakou is a major city in Hebei located roughly 180 kilometers northwest of Beijing, spreading across varied terrain in a mountainous region. The city sits at an elevation of around 716 meters and functions as a key transportation hub connecting different parts of northern China.

The city grew as a military stronghold protecting northern trade routes between China and Mongolia, earning it the nickname the "Northern Gate of Beijing." This strategic location shaped how the place developed and why it remained important over time.
