宣化古城

Xuanhua Ancient City is a fortified settlement with a rectangular shape and stone walls stretching for kilometers, featuring multiple gates and defensive structures. Three main towers, Gongjilou, Qingyuanlou, and Zhenshuolou, display different architectural styles from various periods.

The city developed as a major military center during the Ming Dynasty, serving as the command post for the Xuanfu garrison, one of nine defense strongholds along the Great Wall border. This strategic role shaped its growth over centuries.

Traditional shops and local food places fill the streets, where residents and visitors gather daily. You can see regional crafts being made in workshops and notice how festivals bring the community together throughout the year.

It is best to arrive early to explore the towers and walls without crowds and to see the architectural details more clearly. The paths around the old city are flat and easy to walk, but offer little shade, so wear good shoes and bring sun protection.

The Qingyuanlou Tower holds a large bronze bell from the Ming Dynasty era that marked time for residents for centuries. This bell remains one of the rarest artifacts visitors can see from that period.
