Baotou, Industrial metropolis in Inner Mongolia, China

Baotou is an industrial city in Inner Mongolia situated along the Yellow River, encompassing several urban districts and county divisions across a large area. The city combines modern urban infrastructure with surrounding steppe and river landscape features.

The region grew from a small settlement during the Tang Dynasty into a market town in the Qing Dynasty, with protective walls first built in 1871. This evolution shows how the location gradually increased in importance and became an organized trading hub.

The name Baotou comes from Mongolian words meaning 'place with deer,' reflecting animals that once roamed the surrounding grasslands. Today this heritage shows in local customs and the way residents connect with the landscape around them.

The city has an airport and extensive railway connections linking it to major destinations across northern China. Visitors can reach the city by various transport options and move around using the established network.

Saihan Tala Grassland sits within the city center, making this place the only major Chinese city with a steppe preserve at its core. This feature sets it apart from other industrial centers across the country.
