Beijing Film Academy, Film school and public university in Beijing, China
The Beijing Film Academy is a film school and university in the Haidian district of northwest Beijing. The campus consists of several buildings with sound stages, editing suites, and screening rooms for student work and training.
The institution began in 1928 as a research institute under the central film bureau. It became the film academy in 1956 when training was reorganized around specialized departments.
The campus sits on Xitucheng Lu and attracts young film enthusiasts who gather in small groups to discuss scripts or rehearse scenes in the corridors. Open days allow visitors to see how the next generation of directors and cinematographers learns their craft.
Access is typically limited to open days or scheduled tours, as the facility serves primarily as a teaching campus. Walking through the surrounding neighborhood shows how students and instructors fill the streets nearby.
Many graduates have become well-known directors and cinematographers in China and abroad. The entrance examination draws more than 40,000 applicants each year, but only around 500 places are available.
