Zhaotong is a major city in Yunnan province in southwestern China, situated on a high plateau at around 2,000 meters elevation. The city spreads across hilly terrain with rivers running through it, shaping both its layout and the daily life of its residents.
Zhaotong was historically a trading center along routes connecting Tibet with eastern China. The city developed over centuries as an important transportation hub and maintained this role into modern times.
