South Asian Gate, Postmodern skyscraper in Tuodong Lu Central Business District, Kunming, China.
South Asian Gate is a postmodern skyscraper in the Tuodong Lu Central Business District of Kunming, standing 268 m (879 ft) tall. The tower combines office spaces, residential apartments, a five-star hotel, and retail areas across its many floors.
Planning started in 2008, and during development the originally planned height was reduced from 316 m (1,037 ft) to 268 m (879 ft). This change came in response to seismic safety requirements specific to the Kunming region.
The building represents the growing economic connections between China and South Asian nations through its architectural design and business functions.
The tower sits in the heart of Kunming's central business district, making it easy to reach from other parts of the city. Separate entrances serve the office, hotel, and retail sections, so it helps to know which part you are heading to before you arrive.
The building went through three separate design proposals before its final single-tower form was chosen, replacing an earlier plan for two towers side by side. Few visitors who see it today would guess how different it might have looked.
