Yuen Long Theatre, Theatre building in Yuen Long District, Hong Kong.
Yuen Long Theatre is a theatre building in the Yuen Long district of Hong Kong's New Territories, with a main auditorium seating around 900 people alongside dance studios, rehearsal rooms, and exhibition spaces. The building sits near the centre of Yuen Long town and brings together several different performance and creative spaces under one roof.
The theatre opened in 2000 as part of a government effort to bring arts venues into the outer districts of Hong Kong, beyond the urban core on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon. Before it opened, Yuen Long had few dedicated spaces for live performance.
Cantonese opera is a regular part of the programme here, and the audience for these shows is often made up of local families and older residents who have followed this art form for years. The lobby area sometimes hosts small exhibitions connected to the performances on stage.
The building is within walking distance of Yuen Long town centre and easy to reach by MTR or local bus. It is worth checking what is on before you go, as the programme changes regularly and some events fill up quickly.
The main stage is fitted with motorized drapes and hoists that can reshape the performance space in a short time, letting the venue switch between very different types of productions on the same day. This means a traditional opera set and a contemporary dance layout can follow each other without a long gap between them.
