Dongting Lake Bridge Hangrui, Steel suspension bridge in Yueyang, China
The Second Dongting Lake Bridge, also called the Hangrui Expressway Dongting Lake Bridge, is a double-tower, double-span steel truss suspension bridge with a total length of 2,390 metres and a main span of 1,480 metres. Its deck is 33.5 metres wide and carries six expressway lanes. The two towers rise from concrete bases, each topped with orange finials from which thin orange cables run down to the deck.
The bridge opened in 2018 and significantly improved transportation connections between eastern and western regions. It became part of a larger highway system linking multiple provinces across central China.
The bridge crosses Dongting Lake, the second largest freshwater lake in China, which functions as a natural water regulation system for the Yangtze River.
The bridge carries the six-lane Hangrui Expressway (G56) between Linxiang and Yueyang, with a design speed of 100 km/h and a deck 33.5 m wide. It is a motorway crossing with no pedestrian or cycle access; stop only at official lay-bys or viewpoints off the carriageway.
