Dongting Lake National Natural Reserve

The reserve spans 1,576 square kilometers across Hunan Province, containing extensive wetlands, lakes, and marshes that support diverse wildlife populations.

Established in 1982, the reserve received designation as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance in 1992 and national nature reserve status in 1994.

The reserve forms part of the Dongting Lake system, from which the provinces of Hunan and Hubei derive their names, meaning South and North of the Lake.

The protected area contains three zones: a core area of 332 square kilometers, a buffer zone of 323 square kilometers, and an experimental area of 919 square kilometers.

The reserve hosts 170,000 winter birds and shelters over 70 percent of the global population of lesser white-fronted geese during migration seasons.
