Batatai Tombs, Archaeological site and burial ground in Qujing, China

Batatai Tombs is an archaeological site containing over 150 burial chambers spread across southern Yunnan Province, built with stone structures that reflect ancient construction methods. The chambers held pottery, porcelain, bronze objects, jade, and bead ornaments that provide insight into burial customs from different historical periods.

The tombs span from the Han Dynasty through the Ming and Qing Dynasties, showing how burial practices changed and developed over more than a thousand years. Recent systematic excavations have uncovered these sites and provided new understanding about how people lived and settled in this region across different centuries.

The burial grounds reveal how diverse communities traded across long distances in ancient times, with objects from many regions placed inside the tombs. This mix of local and foreign goods shows that Yunnan served as a major crossroads where different peoples exchanged goods and ideas.

The site is best reached through organized tours from major cities in Yunnan Province, as independent access can be difficult without a local guide. Wear sturdy shoes and bring weather-appropriate clothing, since the paths cross uneven ground through rural areas.

One Eastern Jin Dynasty burial chamber stretches about 10 meters in length and retains its original stone structure intact. This chamber ranks among the largest and best-preserved examples on the entire site, revealing the skilled stonework of ancient builders.
