Villa Preiss, Functionalist villa in Smíchov, Czech Republic
Villa Preiss sits on U Mrázovky Street in the Malvazinky district and is a four-story residential building from the 1930s. The house keeps its original architecture with characteristic features from that era.
The building was designed in 1931 by architect Eduard Hnilička in Functionalist style and built for Jaroslav Preiss and his secretary at the time. After the war it became home to various government offices and later an embassy building.
The villa takes its name from Jaroslav Preiss, who commissioned it during the interwar period. Today visitors can see the plain and geometric style typical of the era that still defines the neighborhood's character.
The building is a private residence and visible from the street, but cannot be entered as it remains occupied. Visitors can photograph it from outside and explore the neighborhood's architecture.
During the communist era, a guard booth was built in front of the building to house security personnel for high-ranking officials. This shows how important the property was during that political period.
