Ostholstein

Ostholstein, Administrative district in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Ostholstein is a district in eastern Schleswig-Holstein between the Bay of Lübeck and the Bay of Kiel, which also includes the island of Fehmarn. The area lies on the Wagria peninsula and extends from sandy beaches to rolling hills with fields and forests.

The area was reshaped into a new administrative district after 1945 by merging traditional counties. Earlier parts of the region belonged to different duchies and smaller principalities, whose traces can still be seen in place names and boundary lines.

Many villages and small towns preserve Hanseatic traditions in their architecture with red brick churches and narrow gabled houses. Along the coast life has been connected with fishing and seafaring for generations, reflected in maritime customs and local festivals.

The region is easy to explore by car with country roads running through fields and villages. Those heading to the island can take the bridge or plan some time for the ferry depending on the starting point and traffic conditions.

The highest point in the federal state is located here with the Bungsberg reaching just 168 meters (551 feet). A lookout tower stands on the hill from which you can survey the Baltic Sea and the hilly landscape on clear days.
