Büsum, Coastal spa in North Sea coast, Germany
Büsum sits on the North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein and features a harbor that handles both leisure sailing and commercial shipping. The settlement stretches along the dike and offers direct access to the tidal flats.
The settlement emerged around 1140 under the name Biusne and was struck repeatedly by severe storm surges between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. These floods changed the coastline permanently and shaped present-day coastal protection.
The name derives from medieval Biusne, pointing to old land beside water. Today visitors come for thalassotherapy treatments and the shrimp trawlers that still land freshly caught North Sea prawns.
The town offers beach facilities, wellness centers, and different lodging options along the coast. Visitors who come early in the morning can watch shrimp trawlers unload and buy freshly caught seafood directly at the harbor.
The town sits at zero meters above sea level and borders directly on Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. At low tide walkers can venture far out onto the exposed sandbanks and explore the tidal zone.
