Treene, River system in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
The Treene is a river system in Southern Schleswig that flows for about 95 kilometers, starting southeast of Flensburg and joining the Eider near Friedrichstadt. Along its course it passes through wooded valleys and open meadowlands with varying water conditions.
The river developed during the Middle Ages as a transport route connecting the North and Baltic Seas, with trading towns growing along its banks. Over centuries it remained a boundary between regions and helped shape the territorial divisions that defined the area.
The river shaped settlement patterns for centuries, with communities relying on its resources and maintaining deep connections to this waterway.
The middle section offers good paddling opportunities while walking paths run along much of the valley. Visitors should know that water levels and trail conditions vary with the season and weather.
Despite beginning on a peninsula near the Baltic, the river flows westward and ultimately reaches the North Sea through the Eider. This unusual path was shaped by glacial landforms created thousands of years ago.
