Fehmarn Belt fixed link, International tunnel project between Puttgarden and Rødby, Germany and Denmark
The Fehmarn Belt fixed link is an international transport project under construction that will connect Puttgarden in Germany with Rødby in Denmark. It runs beneath the Fehmarn Belt strait and includes four road lanes and two railway tracks along a total length of approximately 18 kilometers.
Germany and Denmark signed a State Treaty in September 2008 to build this connection. Work began in January 2021 and is scheduled for completion by 2029.
The crossing joins Fehmarn in Germany with Lolland in Denmark, linking Schleswig-Holstein and the Danish islands through a direct land route. This connection replaces the ferry crossing and creates a continuous road and rail axis between the two nations.
The crossing will take roughly 10 minutes by car and 7 minutes by train once finished. It replaces the current ferry service between Puttgarden and Rødby.
A total of 89 prefabricated concrete elements will be lowered to the seabed and joined together. The structure will become the longest combined road and rail tunnel in the world.
