Sandhausen

Sandhausen is a municipality in Rhein-Neckar district in Baden-Württemberg, situated roughly 7 kilometers south of Heidelberg. The settlement spreads across a landscape shaped by ice-age sand dunes and consists mainly of residential neighborhoods, small commercial zones, and agricultural areas at the edges.

The first written mention occurred in 1262, when Otto von Bruchsal transferred the territory to Elector Ludwig II. Over the centuries, control shifted several times among different regional powers.

The name points directly to the sandy dunes from the ice age that still shape the local landscape today. Streets and squares are lined with trees, and the housing mix includes older buildings alongside newer developments at the edges.

The town sits conveniently between Heidelberg and other cities in the Rhein-Neckar metropolitan region. Direct road connections make it easy to arrive and continue onward to nearby places.

The local football club SV Sandhausen represents one of the smallest municipalities in Germany to ever field a team in the second or third national league. Despite the low population, the club has managed to compete at these levels repeatedly.
