Trischen, Nature reserve island in Meldorf Bay, Germany
Trischen is an uninhabited North Sea island located in Meldorf Bay off the Schleswig-Holstein coast. It features sandy banks, salt marshes, and grassland, and lies entirely within the Wadden Sea National Park.
The island formed approximately 400 years ago from sediment deposits in the North Sea. Since it appeared on nautical charts in 1906 as Busch Sand, it has been continuously documented as an important natural area.
The island serves as a sanctuary for seabirds and seals, making it a key location in the region's conservation efforts. Visitors cannot access the island themselves, but can observe it from nearby boat tours or coastal viewpoints where the wildlife activity is visible from a distance.
The island is closed to public access year-round as a strictly protected nature reserve. However, it can be viewed from the mainland coast or during boat tours that pass nearby.
The island continuously drifts toward the mainland, moving approximately 3 meters per month toward the town of Büsum. This shows how tidal forces and currents constantly reshape this coastal landscape.
