Leipzig University occupies multiple buildings throughout the city, with educational facilities spread across both historical structures and modern academic complexes.
Founded in 1409 by William II, Margrave of Meissen, the institution began with four scholastic faculties and grew into one of Germany's oldest continuous educational establishments.
The university maintains extensive collections in its library, established in 1543, containing valuable manuscripts including the Codex Sinaiticus and numerous historical documents.
The institution offers more than 190 study programs across 14 faculties, serving over 29,000 students with courses in natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.
In 1873, Leipzig University became one of the first German universities to accept women as guest students, with Johanna von Evreinov earning the first female JD.
