Städtisches Kaufhaus

Städtisches Kaufhaus is a neo-baroque building with sandstone and plaster details that houses exhibition halls, shops, and performance spaces in a unified structure. Inside, the layout combines multiple stories and interconnected rooms serving different functions.

Built between 1894 and 1901, it replaced an earlier concert hall where Mozart and Mendelssohn had performed. The new building reflected Leipzig's shift toward becoming a modern commercial center.

The building served as a meeting point where merchants and manufacturers from across the region displayed their goods during the city's fair periods. You can sense how commercial activity shaped the spaces within these walls.

Located near Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz station, the building is easily accessible by multiple tram lines. The complex includes shops, dining options, and exhibition spaces, making it comfortable to spend several hours exploring.

The building still operates Leipzig's oldest passenger elevator from 1901, a working piece of the building's original infrastructure. A bronze statue of Emperor Maximilian I stands in the courtyard as a historical marker from the construction era.
