MDR-Kubus, Broadcasting building in Leipzig, Germany
The MDR-Kubus is a broadcasting building in Leipzig designed with a black facade and an irregular roof that creates a distinctive visual presence. The structure contains two recording halls of different sizes and is connected to the Gewandhaus by a climate-controlled glass bridge.
The building was completed in 2001 and was designed by Dresden architect Peter Kulka as a new headquarters for Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk broadcasting. Its opening represented an important step in modernizing the radio infrastructure of central Germany.
The building houses two recording halls of different sizes where the MDR Radio Choir Leipzig and MDR Symphony Orchestra regularly rehearse and perform recordings. These spaces shape the musical life of the region and form an essential part of Leipzig's artistic identity.
The building is easily accessible and the climate-controlled glass bridge to the Gewandhaus allows easy passage between both music institutions. Visitors can explore the modern architecture from the outside and the grounds are freely accessible during the day.
The structure was named Station 23 of the Leipzig UNESCO Music Trail in 2007, highlighting its special role in the city's music history. This designation connects it with other important music locations and recognizes its contribution to the local artistic community.
