Großer Brombachsee, Artificial lake in Franconian Lake District, Germany.
Großer Brombachsee is an artificial lake in the Franconian Lake District that stretches across three municipalities in Bavaria. At its deepest points, the water reaches approximately 100 feet (30 meters) and sits at an elevation of around 1345 feet (410 meters) above sea level.
The facility was built in the late 1990s as part of a water management project redirecting rivers from water-rich northern Bavaria to drier southern regions. Flooding of the lake was completed in 2000 and marked a milestone after decades of planning.
Local sailing schools and boat rental stations line the shore, drawing families and sports groups on warm days. Many residents use the waterfront paths for cycling or spend afternoons at the swimming spots.
Several stations around the water offer equipment rentals for water sports, and from Langlau train station you can reach the main areas for surfers directly. The waterfront paths are suitable for walks or bike rides and are largely paved.
Beneath the water surface lie parts of old village roads and field boundaries that sometimes become visible when water levels drop. Divers explore these submerged structures and occasionally come across remnants of earlier agricultural use.
