Mengen

Mengen is a town in Baden-Württemberg that features historical timber-framed buildings and sits along a former trade route. The location shows a medieval layout with narrow streets and traditional buildings throughout.

The town gained city rights in 1276 and belonged for centuries to an alliance of five Danube cities. During the Thirty Years War, the settlement successfully defended itself against invaders.

Archaeological excavations in 1876 revealed a Roman villa with a color mosaic depicting Medusa, though the artifact disappeared during World War II.

The town sits on a cycling route and serves as a good stopping point for bicycle travelers with suitable accommodations. Visitors should take time to explore the old town on foot, walking through the traditional streets and checking out the buildings.

Archaeological finds from Roman times show the area was inhabited in antiquity. A mosaic with ancient patterns was discovered during excavations but vanished during World War II.
