Zielfinger Vogelsee, nature reserve in Baden-Württemberg, Germany
The Zielfinger Vogelsee is a protected nature reserve near Mengen and Sigmaringendorf in Baden-Wurttemberg. The water body with its reed beds, shallow zones, and artificially created steep shoreline provides habitat for waterfowl, herons, dragonflies, and various insect species.
The area was designated as a protected nature reserve in 1992 and is managed by the Tubingen regional authority. These protections were established to preserve breeding and resting grounds for migratory birds and habitats for rare bird species and insect populations.
The name Zielfinger Vogelsee refers to the nearby village of Zielfingen and the birdlife that is specially protected here. The shallow shorelines and reed beds remain key habitats for waterfowl species that define the place and are regularly observed by visitors today.
The area is accessible via small, well-maintained rural roads and suits day trips and brief visits. Walking paths along the shoreline are easy to navigate, allowing visitors to observe birds and explore nature at their own pace.
Kingfishers use the artificially created steep shoreline for nesting, while specially designed floating nests have been installed for river gulls. These targeted measures demonstrate how the reserve is deliberately optimized for rare bird species.
