Berlin-Tempelhof Airport, Historic airport in Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Germany.
Berlin-Tempelhof Airport is a preserved airport in Tempelhof-Schöneberg, consisting of a sprawling terminal building with a curved facade of light natural stone. The building wraps around the former airfield in a semicircular arc and is accessible through several entrance doors along the front face.
The airport emerged in the nineteen thirties as part of a larger urban redesign of the site. The airlift of 1948 to 1949 transformed the site into a symbol of supplying West Berlin during the Soviet blockade.
The former airport takes its name from the Tempelhof district and has become a large open space for city residents. Today people use the grounds for cycling, skating and meeting together outdoors.
Guided tours start at the CHECK-IN visitor center near the main entrance and offer insight into the building's architecture and history. The large outdoor grounds are freely accessible and invite walking or sports activity.
The covered canopy of the terminal extends far over the apron and once offered shelter for passengers walking directly to their aircraft. This roof structure is among the largest cantilevered constructions of its time.
