Theater im Zimmer, Classical theatre in Harvestehude, Germany
Theater im Zimmer is a theatre housed in a classical villa from the 1800s in Hamburg. The building contains multiple rooms and opens onto a garden by the Alster River, where different types of performances and events take place.
The theatre was founded in 1948 and began in a private apartment before relocating to this villa, which was built in 1829. The house itself was previously home to a ship captain and received protected monument status in 1947.
The venue creates productions where the audience feels directly engaged and shares the experience closely. Visitors sit near the performers and sense an atmosphere that recalls a living room rather than a formal stage.
The venue accommodates around 150 people and is easily accessible from the Alster waterfront area. Visitors who want to explore should know that the rooms have an intimate feel and allow closer interaction with performers.
The riverside garden is often overlooked by visitors, yet on pleasant days it becomes an integral part of the experience. People can linger in this outdoor space between performances and discover the waterfront setting on their own.
