Port of Mainz

The Port of Mainz features modern facilities along the Rhine River with 522-meter quays, five portal cranes and storage capacity for 10,300 twenty-foot equivalent units.

Established between 1880 and 1887, this port developed on the foundations of ancient Mogontiacum, a Roman military camp founded in 12 BC by Nero Claudius Drusus.

Wine-making traditions inherited from Roman times continue today with numerous vineyards around the port area, celebrating ancient heritage through local festivals and cultural events.

The port is accessible from downtown via tram and bus connections, with guided tours scheduled primarily during summer season to explore historical remains and modern facilities.

Archaeological excavations revealed the famous Mainz Gladius discovered in 1848, now housed in the British Museum as evidence of Roman military presence in the region.
