Neues Proviantamt, Military heritage building in Mainz, Germany
The Neues Proviantamt is a storage complex in Mainz made up of multiple warehouses built from characteristic yellow clinker brick and towers with steep pyramid roofs facing the Rheinallee. The buildings display sturdy construction designed to house large quantities of supplies and spread across a significant area along the riverbank.
The complex was built between 1899 and 1906 by the German Reich Military Construction Office to supply northwestern barracks in Mainz. Severe damage during World War II required later reconstruction and adaptation of the site.
The building's design blends elements from the Belle Époque and Art Nouveau periods, which you can see in the details of its facades. This stylistic mix still shapes how the structure looks today.
The site is located near the port area and easily recognizable from outside because of its distinctive yellow brick exterior. The complex is undergoing transformation into residential and office spaces, so access and viewing options may change depending on construction progress.
The largest structure in the complex was a seven-story oat storage building that was destroyed during World War II and never rebuilt. This lost building was once the tallest and most impressive element of the entire ensemble.
