Rostock Zoo, Animal park in Rostock, Germany
The zoo extends across 56 hectares of land and houses 4,500 animals from 320 species, making it the largest zoological garden on the German Baltic coast.
Founded in 1899 on former military grounds called Trotzenburg, the zoo started with a collection of wild boars and various species of deer in enclosed areas.
The zoo maintains the European studbook for polar bears since 1980, coordinating breeding programs and contributing to international species preservation.
The Darwineum and animal houses close one hour after ticket office closure, with seasonal opening hours ranging from 9:00 to 18:00 throughout the year.
The Darwineum, constructed in 2012, spans 20,000 square meters and functions as a living museum displaying over 80 animal species under one roof.
